Learning new skills is something.
A little context behind me.
I'm one of many artists online, yes. I don't share a lot of personal information regarding my life or what I generally do often, but it's needed in this instance to tell you why I suddenly have taken up learning HTML.
I am a University student, shocking I'm aware. But, I'm specifically the Eng Lit student that wants to nosedive into marketing. No surprise there, I'm sure I talked about it before somewhere, sometime ago. But, due to this want I actually have to advertise myself publicly. This includes social medias, updates on what I'm doing, relating what I'm learning as I'm having fun doing all of this, and learning new skills. Part of those new skills have included, as of late, editing videos, some editing audios, and designing my own website.
Of course, if you know me (or if you don't) you'd see that I post this funky little link everywhere. It's my public carrd online, it relates to my commissions, my social medias, and a tiny bit about me. Heck, it even links to this blog too. But, I personally don't want to use a carrd forever. Using online services like Wix is a pain because it costs a bunch to host a website, and I'm a uni student, not a business. I do not own that type of money. So, to do anything would mean that I'd have to use websites and services like carrd, or linktree. That was until a couple of weeks ago.
My wife
No, I'm not actually married, I just call this particular friend of mine my wife. We will all get to know her as my wife. If I say my wife the words "Mubinna's wife" should pop up in your head. She's a very talented artist that I recommend any artist over 18 should check her out. Like me, she's also a person very motivated by their projects and ideas. Also like me, we sometimes share the same goals. Her current goal is actually not for me to discuss, but one aspect of this project she's currently making is to make herself a website, and now my interest is directly piqued. I forget what conversation made me get into it specifically, I think it was my wife describing the freedom of choice she gets with their learning journey towards it. I want that too. So, basically, I'm copying her. But, now what? We're both on our own seperate journeys and, I'm simply one girl learning how to do many things. Now how do I do that?
HTML & CSS
My wife started her journey earlier than I did for the sole reason of me being too tired to do anything that day. So, really I had 2 days of rambles she had told me regarding HTML, and CSS. I was used to seeing HTML, primarily because of how I had to set up both my art fight account and my toyhouse account. One I had used a template and the other my entire free will. It was glorious. But, due to that I was a little more confident diving into HTML. HTML is so straight forward. Obviously, I'm no master at it (yet) but the sheer fact that it's this easy to get into with so many tutorials online? I am impressed. Of course, my wife Rosie told me both HTML and CSS are pretty straightforward and I do believe them, but damn. I am shocked indeed.
I didn't get as much practice as I would've liked to that day (4th September) but I was resolving something in my laptop the entire day just so I could use Da Vinci Resolve (an editing software I want to use to make videos.)
From September 5th to September 6th I spent my time instead making various notes regarding this thing and that. The fun fact about me is that I expect literally everything around me to have a limit. So while you may think it's useless to make notes when one should realistically jump right in, I think it was a good waste of my time. For example, the <meta> tag is something I would never stumble across by pure accident nor coincidence. That tag as an artist who wants her work out there is useful to me, so I know at the very least I'm promoting something with my own words, rather than promoting something to the algorithm on Tiktok or Instagram and hoping that it will stick.
From the 6th to the 7th, I have now completed my first preview of a website! (Mind you,) it doesn't look good whatsoever, however I made it and learnt a million things from it. For being my first try at HTML, I'm very proud of it.
Yes, you may notice the buttons. It's a mockup of something I do eventually want to make, my own blog website. Granted, I'm gonna have to learn a backend programming language and shed much more tears during this. This blog is NOT going anywhere else anytime soon.
Mubinna, what's your next steps?
More webpages? Are you completely abandoning art? Will you run into the sunset leaving only the memory of silly arts behind?
Yes, no, and not yet.
I'm gonna keep trying to make websites as it's something I'm quite determined to do before I return to university. I'm going to keep it up, and I'm going to keep posting about it onto this blog. I will still keep doing art, but maybe some doodles for now until my website obsession ends. But, as far as my next steps? Javascript lads. Javascript.
All that being said, I'm curious if you readers actually have any experience with this sort of thing. What's your tips and tricks? Is it all trial and error with a mix of looking things up? Let me know if you know, I'm curious.
This was your local Mubinna, I'll see ya sometime!
